Transcript of Spooky Story Interview;
Jim;"Can you tell us in general, how long ago this was and location details?"
John "It was about ten years ago this happened.. it was in a place called Bilston.. which is here in Midlothian, in a place where I live called Dalkeith.. Dalkeith and Bilston (in Midlothian) in just outside Edinburgh, and Bilston was where ( and still is) the ..eh.. the Police Communications Centre is located. So.. I'd been maybe 6 months in training with them when this happened.. and.. the communications centre is like a big, big room, it's divided into two sections, on one side you've got people like myself taking the calls from the public and on the other side you had operations people.. radio operators, they'd respond to whatever you heard from the public and you'd fire it over to them, by way of an incident, so that's the nature of the job, you'd get a call from a member of the public, you'd ask them loads of questions.. what's happening? where is it happening? Is it happening now? has it just happened? - get an idea of the timescale involved and stuff like that.
Back then we worked (because I was in training) we started at half past one in the afternoon on a back shift, training, for 6 months we'd finish every night at half past ten, so this happened on a Friday night and the call came in at about half past nine at night, ( a few of us were going to be going to the pub afterwards because it was the end of a busy week again...)
*both laugh over 'Pub'*
John continues; "The best place to unwind after taking police calls after the whole week and a long day, it was a long day, y'know, half one to half ten, so yeah it was half past nine on the Friday night and we'd already arranged to go the pub for half past ten when we were finished, and I got a call in, it was a young chap phoned me up, the first thing he said was "I'm phoning you up from Cannongate, the Cannongate area, I'm here with my wife and she's expecting her first bairn [child), she's going to have her first child... and there's no-one else meant to be in the building," They'd been there about a week, they'd been lead to believe that they were the only people in that building, because what had happened was the Landlord who was now away on holiday, had told them that 'you guys are the only ones who are going to be in the property', they were on the ground floor, in a flat [apartment] there. He told me for the past 3 nights he says, we've been hearing what sounds to me like a really young child, young infant, crying.
As he's telling me this, I can hear in the background, sounds like an infant to me, crying its eyes out, it was like a really lusty cry, like an infant that's teething, it sounded in distress, like in pain, ...that's right (agrees with Jim).. then he (guy on phone) says; Can You Hear That? and the whole time I've been hearing this, because we were trained to block out noises in the background when taking calls and concentrate on the caller, but I couldn't do it because this noise kept coming into the conversation and I said to him "Of course I can.. you mean the child?" and he said 'Well that's what I thought it was and me and the wife were talking and I thought, am I just imagining this or is it a cat or something and .." and I knew what he meant because, y'know, cats when they get together and they start caterwauling away and I said 'Yeah, I've heard that and that isn't cats, that's a child! and I totally agree with you, that's unmistakable.."
Jim; "So they'd heard it for 3 nights?
John; "They'd heard it at different times for 3 nights, he said the latest he could remember was his wife wakening up the previous morning, about 2 in the morning.. wakening him up and saying that it would start the previous night and go on til maybe about 3 in the morning, and he said 'the reason I'm phoning you is because I went up about half an hour ago when the sound started again to locate where it was coming from, because we were starting to get concerned. He says 'Where it's coming from is the flat at the very top of the building, the upper floor flat, the third floor and it's an auld [old] wooden door and I maybe shouldn't have done this and I apologise because I'll maybe get myself into trouble for this but I thought I'd better try it as I was concerned," and I told him 'No you'll not get into trouble' and he said "I tried the handle, the door's locked, it's got a spyhole and I looked through the spyhole and the whole place is in darkness but when I got to the door, the crying stopped."
Jim; "Had anybody else in the area reported...
John; "No, no, we'd had no reports, because the first thing you check is if there's been any other similar calls from that particular area, the Cannongate, no this was the first we were hearing about this.."
So, (guy on phone) he said "I came back down to the flat and told the wife, and she said 'I think you should call the Police' and she said the reason being - and I agree with her- is that we were told that there was no-one in the place, I work but the wife's here all the time and neither of us have seen anybody coming or going, and yet, we're hearing this kid every night? So she said 'phone the police, I'm sufficiently concerned to get in touch ' and I hope I've done the right thing?" and so I said "Of course you have, I've got officers on the way right now, that's sufficiently concerning to me as well, you're telling me that and I can hear that, it's as clear as day' y'know.
And the officers got sent, they're on their way, 2 officers nearby, picked up the call, accepted it, said 'We'll take this, we're the closest' and they went to meet the guy.. so.. what happened next was, I'm still on the phone to the guy, and I said 'The officers have arrived now because I can see it on my screen, took the car, they're outside in the car, they're coming to the main door of the building, they'll come to your door first, and I just want you to tell them how you told it to me, exactly what's been happening. They arrived while I'm still on the phone to him. The door goes and he answers it and he (the guy) still on the phone to me and he says 'What do you want me to do?' and I said 'Just hang up, speak to the officers and best of luck and I hope you get it all resolved and that child's safe" So that was it, and then I leave it, and then it's a waiting game, but this time it's maybe quarter to... quarter to ten? ten to ten? ..and there's a wee wait now while I see what's going to happen on my screen because when the officer.. eh.. types things up, I can see it on my screen at work, so the first thing that happens it the two officers got the guy, and they went up to the door and they're outside the door, and the sound has begun again and they can hear the child crying.. and the officer immediately types up, 'There are definitely sounds of a child crying from within.. and it sounds to me like this child is in distress, can we please have a locksmith or joiner here, urgently'. Across the room, the operational people have organised joiners to help the Police to gain access, so there's maybe another ten minutes goes by while the Police are waiting on the joiner to arrive, the sound continues and then the sound stops! Because it's this intermittent crying noise, y'know, and I would describe it as, the type of noise that would come and go, it was like when you listen to a radio show and you've maybe not got the dial correctly like..."
Jim; "Kinda fading in and out a bit?"
John; "Coming and Going, aye, near and far, it had that quality to it, so... ten minutes later the joiner arrives, he comes up to where they are on the third floor, he's outside the door with them and he's trying the lock and stuff.. and he says 'I've never seen a lock like this, can I go back and get some more tools?' because he's tried a few things and they're not working, Police are urgently wanting in, so they say 'Yeah' and he goes back down the van for some other stuff, comes back up, so maybe another ten minutes go by, so maybe we're ten past ten, quarter past ten at this point. And I'm following all of this on the screen, so he's ten minutes again and finally, he breaks the lock, and they gain access to the property and the first thing that goes up is the Policeman saying 'The joiner has got us access to the property and am now going in'
Jim; "So you're still on the phone at this time?"
John; "No I've been off the phone now for maybe about half an hour.."
Jim; "So this is the officer relating to you what's ...
John; "This is him typing up on the incident I've created, I can follow what's happening now with his words being typed up, he's just been putting up little bits and pieces in between until they got access, so he's saying now 'We've got access, we've got into the property, we're going in, it's all in darkness, the sound has stopped, just as the joiner managed to break the lock, the child has not cried, we're very concerned, we're going in, complete darkness'. So they get the lights on, and what they describe basically is a big box room, there's no persons within, there's no child, there's no pets of any description, no animals, there's nothing here. The windows are all bolted shut, see if something was causing this... there's no explanation for what I've heard,
Jim "So the property had been empty for a long time?"
John "Clearly, just like the landlord had told them, these were auld flats on the upper stairs that were to be refurbished, so, they're in now and they've got a quandry and they've got a real dilemma, and the officer realises what he's typed up isn't going to make any kinda sense at all, to anybody reading this.
Jim "So what were you thinking then, by that time?"
John "I was already... already freaked out.. because of the noise,I say that but, it wasn't just the sounds of a child crying.. this sounded like.. and it sounds dramatic to say, but, it sounded like something that used to be human? The word I would use is 'unearthly' it wasn't like a sound I'd heard before, I know what a child crying sounds like, an infant teething, the couple had heard it three nights in a row, and on the third night they'd phoned me sufficiently concerned that there was something not right about this, they hadn't seen any mother, or any family or any people going in or out, they left it initally because they thought that it's just somebody who keeps to themselves and obviously they've got a problem with the child..
Jim "So, the Police Officers, I take it they had by that time done a full inspection?"
John "They'd gone in, they'd turned the lights, turned these lights on, established obviously the room was empty, there was no-one in, no animals, nothing that could be making the sound, nothing immediate, so, windows, that was the next thing, so I should explain at this point, middle of winter, a really still night, there was not a wind to talk about, before I got this call I knew that anyway because,I'd been out, I was out the back having a cigarette, now, up in Bilston, you're going higher up groundwise, so if there's wind or bad weather, you get it worse, so you get blown off your feet half the time if the weather was attrocious, but it was absolutely still, but they checked the windows anyway, as I say, as they reported, they were bolted shut, couldn't move them.."
Jim "So how were you feeling by this time?"
John "Absolutely freaked out, there was a chimney area, a chimney .. the Officer had put on his notes; "I can see a chimney here I'm just going to look up. See if maybe that's where the sound is.." desperately trying to get an explanation, obviously, so he's looked up the chimney, and his colleague and they've taken turns and they've gone as far up as they can and there's nothing in the chimney, there's nothing, there's no air that we can establish hearing and there's no wind tonight, ehm... and that's why I say at this point, he's like me, and that guy who phoned, and the colleague, he's desperately backtracking in his own mind, trying to come up with something that looks credible enough to finish off the call because the one thing the Police don't like is to get a call like that, with no ending.. 'we went out, we heard a child crying, quite clearly, we didn't imagine it, and we'll leave at that...' he'd be out of a job for Christmas, he seriously would.. his superior would call him in and say 'I've got some bad news for you, y'know, we've not got any room in the force, for people like yourself, PC Acorah* So you'll have to go, I'm afraid, y'know, that's the attitude, so they've got a very dismissive attitude of anything ..ehm.. remotely related to stuff like that, so the officer basically summed up the call, this is his words, pretty much as I remember them..
*Acorah is a reference to a high profile Psychic Medium, Derek Acorah (UK)
and they appeared on my screen; and he said "we cannot explain what we heard outside the door, I believe I heard a child crying when we entered the room obviously as I have reported. There are no people in the room. The windows are all shut tight, the only explanation I can offer..." and that's important, he's not stating anything, he's offering it, he's basically like me and everyone else involved in this, he's thinking 'I don't have any explanation for this, but I've got to put something down so that I don't look like a right charlie!'
Jim "So did you share this with anyone else?
John "I was just gonna say what he finished off with, with his explanation was 'the only explanation I can offer here is that perhaps air has somehow become trapped in the piping system of the building and it moves around and we're unable to establish its location at this point in time' and he left it at that. As I said at the start of this, my colleagues were all on different calls so, I was telling them what had happened, they were all looking at the incident there as well and saying so, what's happened here? Where's the child? Where's the bairn? Have they no found the bairn?? I said 'They've not found anything, they've not got rational for this at all, so that officer has put that up by way of explanation for his bosses so that he doesn't look completely stupid, he's backtracked!
Jim "So was there many people at your work that got to know about it?"
John "Just the people immediatly sitting with me were aware of it, once I told them, it was now close to finishing time, we were going to this pub I was talking about, but everybody was a bit... y'know.. when they read it, nothing about it made sense, nothing, there wasn't a credible explanation at all for it, everyplace... Edinburgh's steeped in that kind of history, but you get an experience like this and people will, you'll get asked this and I get asked alot, have you ever seen a ghost, it's like have you ever seen a UFO and stuff like that, ehm, I've never, never seen either, never seen a ghost in my life, but what I do say to them is, maybe one time I did hear one, and it sounded quite young, that's the best explanation I can give to it, but to me, what I heard wasn't human,
Jim "How did you feel.. afterwards?"
John "Afterwards.. I was chilled by it, I'll be honest, the hairs on the back of my neck had long since been stood up since speaking to the guy and hearing what was going on, a locked room that's completely empty, there was no way out, couldn't have been a prank, it wasn't an animal, it was no living being that was causing this and that just leads me just to...once you've eliminated everything that it could've possibly been, you're left with something.. a bit more.. supernatural. I would say leave your assumptions.. or presumptions.. or the way you believe things, at the door, if you can identify that this is something that's happening to you. Leave any bias behind you because I wasn't sure before getting this call and having this experience that ghosts were something that I absolutely believed in, I've always leaned towards the fact that there's too much evidence there to discount it, you can't just absolutely disbelieve in something or em... criticise someone's testimony, so go in with an open mind, and just judge it by your own experience, that's all you can do, tell it truthfully, I've told it truthfully, exactly how it happened, exactly how it made me feel, it was frightening.
Jim "Ok, thanks very much John.."
John "You're welcome, thanks very much for giving me the opportunity to tell the story.."
Jim "Now we'll go add some creepy music.."
(laughs to fade)
